Is this cheerleading outfit too skimpy? Yes, says the University of Idaho, after fans complained about the new-look uniforms.
Can cheerleaders' outfits be too revealing? Not for most red-blooded American sports fans. But for the fans of the University of Idaho in Moscow the answer may come as a surprise.
The university ordered a new look for the Vandals cheerleaders after fans complained the new uniforms were showing a lot more than just school spirit.
"A number of fans were concerned that the uniforms were inappropriate," Bruce Pitman, dean of students, told The Associated Press. "To be fair, there were a number of fans who liked them."
The new two-piece outfits causing the uproar - halter tops and black skirts with white trim - are similar to what pro football fans see every Sunday from their cheerleaders, Pitman added.
"I'm not quite sure what will happen to them," he said.
For Idaho's last game, the cheerleaders left the skimpier uniforms at home for a more tame look - black volleyball shorts and football jerseys.
New uniforms have been ordered, with a less revealing halter-style top and a skirt about six inches longer than the ones the fans complained about. The new uniforms are expected to debut on Oct. 4 when the Vandals play host to Nevada.
According to Pitman, the $4,200 cost of the skimpy uniforms came from a spirit squad fund, part of which is drawn from student fees. Private funds were used to pay for the new more-modest look.
It's the second time this season the University of Idaho has had a wardrobe malfunction. The football team was forced to remove the UI logo from the buttocks of their new pants after fans complained.
